RS = ETF return minus SPY return (percentage points) over 1 / ~5 / ~21 / ~63 sessions. 1d is shown for timing context but does not enter the score. Data auto-refreshes via Next.js cache (~6 hours).

How scoring works

Relative strength (RS) is the ETF's percent return minus SPY's return over the same window. A positive RS means the group beat the market; negative means it lagged. The composite score weights the intermediate horizons more than the very short or very long ones — matching VaultCharts desktop Discovery:

  1. Compute RS over 1d / 1w / 1m / 3m (~1 / 5 / 21 / 63 sessions).
  2. Score = 50 + RS1w×1.2 + RS1m×2.2 + RS3m×0.6, then clamp to 0–100. 1d is display-only.
  3. Trend tags (leading / improving / weakening / lagging) come from 1w + 1m RS only.

FAQ

What is sector rotation?

Sector rotation is when capital shifts from one industry group to another — for example from technology into energy or defensives. Comparing industry ETFs to SPY on relative strength shows which groups are leading or lagging the broad market.

How is the Market Brief score calculated?

Each ETF gets relative strength (ETF return minus SPY return) over about 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. Score = clamp(50 + RS1w×1.2 + RS1m×2.2 + RS3m×0.6). Expand any row to see the exact arithmetic. One-day RS is shown for context but is not in the score.

Which ETFs are included?

All 11 Select Sector SPDRs (including XLRE and XLC), plus industry sleeves such as SMH, XBI, KRE, XRT, XHB, ITA, TAN, GDX, URA, and style proxies IWM and QQQ. SPY is the benchmark.

Is this investment advice?

No. The Market Brief is an educational relative-strength dashboard. It does not recommend buys or sells. Always do your own research.
